Imagine standing on the edge of the earth’s own palette — where fiery orange meets deep mineral green and the air shimmers with rising steam. This is Champagne Pool, one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary geothermal wonders.
Dominated by vivid contrasts — the brilliant orange rim is created by deposits of minerals such as arsenic and antimony sulphides, while the emerald green water owes its color to colloidal sulfur and ferrous salts suspended in the pool. Rising steam veils the surface, adding an air of mystery and emphasizing the intense heat of this geothermal environment (the water averages about 74°C). Visually, it feels almost surreal — a meeting of earth and chemistry, where the planet’s hidden energy paints its own abstract masterpiece. The strong interplay of orange, green, and white-gray gives it a painterly quality reminiscent of color-field art, while the rising mist softens the edges, inviting the viewer to linger between the real and the otherworldly.
